Will Tieman calls Ottawa County's first new radio station in more than 40 years "a natural.' Tieman, who owns WGHN (92.1 FM and 1370 AM) in Grand Haven, recently spent $100,000 in a federal government frequency bidding process to acquire the rights to put 93.1 FM on the air, with the city of license as Ferrysburg. "For us, what a natural,' Tieman said. "It enables us to do things we would like to do, especially at night.'

Pickleball, paintings and a peek into the past highlight the 26th Spring Lake Heritage Festival, which kicks off Tuesday with Winsor McCay Day and crescendos to a conclusion next Saturday with a waterfront fireworks show. New this year is a senior citizen art mixer from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn, a Tri-Cities Historical Museum presention on Spring Lake resorts at 7 p.m. Thursday at Barber School and a pickleball tournament from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Central Park.

In Shakespeare's own lifetime, it was illegal for women to perform on the professional stage in England. Shakespeare wrote his plays for all-male companies of actors, in which teenage boys played the women's roles. This summer, the Grand Haven-based Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company will return to this tradition with an all-male cast production of Shakespeare's "Cymbeline.' This production will be directed by Bob Jones, who will travel to West Michigan from Virginia to direct the play.

The Grand Haven Area Arts Council will kick off its summer concert series next week with three concerts. Tuesdays in the Park will start June 14 with Don Middlebrook and Living Soul in Grand Haven Central Park from 7-8:30 p.m. Dance on the Waterfront will have its first night June 15 at the Waterfront Stadium with the Spring Lake Dance Band. Line Dancing Instruction begins at 6:30, followed by Ballroom Dancing from 7-8:30 p.m. The cost is $2.50 Sweet Lou and The Savages will launch Thursdays at the Point June 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Spring Lake at the Point.

Jeremy Thelen might have been seeing flashbacks of former Spring Lake soccer standout attackers Annie Steinlage and Lauren Gagnon on Friday evening. Unfortunately, the pair that resembled the former Lakers were sporting the Blue & Gold of the DeWitt Panthers during the Division 2 regional championship game at Cedar Springs High School.

Western Michigan Christian's varisty boys golf team backed up its No. 1 state ranking by winning Thursday's Divison 4 regional championship, shooting a team score of 320. Manistee Catholic Central was second with a 323, and NorthPointe Christian was third with a 328. The Warriors advance to next weekend's state finals, which will be held at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale. WMC's Collin Breit was the fourth medalist with a round of 78, followed by brother Alec Breit with a 79. Jon Cook shot an 80, and Sam Vos added an 83.

The fledgeling Midwest Beach Volleyball Tour makes its first of three scheduled stops in Grand Haven today. The MBVT Sun Drop Amateur Series event will take place at Grand Haven State Park, with the professionals beginning at 8 a.m. and the amateurs getting under way at 9 a.m. According to event organizer Scott VanderWerp, the women's professionals should begin their finals match around 3 p.m. with the men's finals around 4 p.m.

St. John's Lutheran School was the overall champion in this year's Cool School Competition between area elementary schools at the ice cream shops Sweet Temptations, Skoops and The Front Porch. The Cool School Competition placed schools at each store, and the school received 10 percent of the sales for the day. The school with the highest sales then received an additional 10 percent of their competing schools' sales.

The third annual Adirondack Auction for the Northwest Ottawa County Chamber Foundation has begun. Six pieces, all painted by local artists by donation, have been placed throughout the community for viewing and bidding. The auction generates revenue for the foundation, which uses the funds to continue to develop and implement community events such as the upcoming Sand Sculpture Contest and Grand Haven Art Festival. The pieces available for bidding by the public this year include two adult-size chairs, two side tables and two child-size chairs.

Amid the clamor of parents and just-graduated fourth-graders milling through Holmes Elementary School's cafeteria, Mary Keeton greeted members of the crowd on her last day as the Spring Lake school's principal. Between fielding requests for pictures with students, Keeton explained that she will be turning 60 soon, and wanted to retire while she still had energy do other things. The biggest challenge she faced during her 14 years as the Holmes principal? "Letting it go,' she said.

A Spring Lake man has started an effort to recall state Sen. Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive. In his recall petition notice, Jason Collins, 117 N. Division St., said he wants Meekhof recalled for voting in favor of the state budget bill last month that was eventually signed by Gov. Rick Snyder. The Ottawa County clerk's elections office received the notice from Collins in the mail on Tuesday. Ottawa County Elections Coordinator Justin Roebuck said there is a concerted effort to recall state legislators who voted in support of the governor's budget.
