The Tri-Cities Family YMCA will host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. The drive is being organized by Michigan Blood - an independent, nonprofit organization that provides blood and blood products for hospitals across Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The blood drive will take place at the YMCA, 1 Y Drive in Grand Haven, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Todd Whiteman, a Holland city councilman since 2009, has been named executive director of Disability Network/Lakeshore. The Holland-based disability information and advocacy organization serves Ottawa and Allegan counties. Whiteman, 38, succeeds founding executive director Ruth Stegeman, who left in December after guiding the nonprofit organization from its inception in 1992.

A "green' roof set to be installed atop the Grand Haven Community Center will provide a new look to the facility. "Your typical roof is an unattractive feature,' LiveRoof LLC General Manager Dave MacKenzie said. "When you have a ‘green' roof, you have something that is beautiful.'

After hearing from a resident who opposes the proposal, the Grand Haven Township Board on Monday tabled two resolutions that would have set an assessment and authorize a street light installation in a rural area. A special assessment lighting district in the area of 152nd Avenue and Rich Street has been proposed.

Aspiring musicians are invited to Loutit District Library on Thursday as West Michigan musician David Rucks presents "How to Record Music: Part 2.' Ruck's program is a continuation of his first offering on April 14. Thursday's program details tips and advice for those who already have or are looking to purchase sophisticated home recording equipment. He will also include ideas after one has started the recording process, insight on advanced equipment and demonstrations on making a professional-sounding CD.

The Michigan Maritime Museum will celebrate its 30th Classic Boat Show on Saturday. Among the featured exhibits will be the Duchess, a 1904 gas launch from Gull Lake; Norman, a 1956 utility Chris Craft from Holland; and Babe, a Rhodes 27 sailboat from Chicago. The steamboat Willie from Saugatuck is anticipated to be in attendance.

Loutit District Library's 2011 summer reading clubs - "One World, Many Stories' for children and "You Are Here' for teens - kicked off this week. Children of all ages and teens are invited to read books, attend special events, win prizes and become eligible for a grand prize drawing at the end of the program. The Muskegon-based Pet Pantry of Michigan will be hosting bingo in Grand Haven on Saturday to benefit the hungry animals in the community. The goal is to reach $1,000. The entry fee is $5 and each card is $1. Bring a pet food donation to receive a free bingo card (one free card per person). Spring Lake school custodians met Monday afternoon to discuss the school board's pending decision on whether to privatize the district's cleaning services. The school board will consider the deal Wednesday at a board meeting that will follow a budget hearing. The board meets at 6:45 p.m. in the Spring Lake Middle School Media Center for the hearing, with the meeting to follow.

Three Zeeland men were hospitalized after their sport utility vehicle went under a semitrailer at a Holland Township intersection on Monday, police said. Police said the accident happened shortly after 6:15 p.m. when Amrit Mundy, 23, of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, drove his semitrailer truck through a red light on southbound U.S. 31 at Quincy Street. Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the empty semitrailer was struck by a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor being driven east through the intersection by 67-year-old Ron Sisouphone of Zeeland.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Department said searchers have found the body of a 28-year-old man who fell into the Grand River while trying to help free his brother's kayak from a logjam. Chief Deputy Greg Harless said the body of Sean Arnett of Holt was discovered about noon Monday near the Burchfield Park boat launch. He disappeared Wednesday in the river in Delhi Township near Lansing. The Lansing State Journal reported Arnett had two children.

A water safety awareness event that began with 11 teams eight years ago has grown to 80 teams, and become one of the Tri-Cities' most recognizable beach events. The eighth annual Beach Survival Challenge is Saturday at the Grand Haven State Park. Registered teams are to check in from 8-9 a.m., with games beginning at 10 a.m. Awards for first, second and third place in each of the divisions will follow at around 4 p.m.

The Spring Lake couple already organize the Coast Guard Park Trail Run and the Octoberfest marathon and half marathon. Add the Heritage Festival 5K run and walk to that list. Ottawa County deputies said three men survived being run over by a semitrailer truck in a crash that closed U.S. 31 for nearly two hours on Monday evening. The accident happened around 6:15 p.m. on southbound U.S. 31 in Holland Township.
