The wife of an Army officer serving in Afghanistan witnessed her husband's death as the two video chatted via Skype, his family said today. The circumstances of Capt. Bruce Kevin Clark's death were not immediately available. The Pentagon said it was under investigation, and his brother-in-law said he didn't have details.

Two boys who admitted to throwing eggs at a Spring Lake restaurant were caught Wednesday, and police said the teens may be involved in an ongoing ethnic intimidation case. A Grand Haven woman called police after witnessing two boys throwing eggs at the front windows and door of Chan's restaurant, 228 W. Savidge St., on Wednesday afternoon.

A preliminary exam for two Grand Rapids-area men charged of bilking several West Michigan residents out of more than $9 million continues this afternoon with testimony from an 87-year-old Holland woman. Jeffrey Ripley, 59, of Sparta; and Danny Lee VanLiere, 60, of Grand Rapids are each charged with conducting criminal enterprise (racketeering), six counts of false pretenses $20,000 or more, and 25 counts of general violations of the state's Securities Act.

The openers last weekend were slow but catch rates should pick up as warmer temperatures push into the state. Water levels are low in some of the rivers and inland lakes so use caution especially at the boat launches. Southwest Lower Peninsula St. Joseph: Salmon fishing is starting to pick up with limit catches reported. Saugatuck: Salmon fishing was steady with a few decent catches of chinook and coho in 60 feet of water. Spoons worked best.

Spring Lake's J.P. Batts and Michael Dillingham each belted home runs as the Lakers and North Muskegon played to a 4-4 tie in a game that was eventually called because of lightening on Thursday. "We've been hitting so many fly balls, and the ball just doesn't carry this year, so we've been telling the kids, we've got to focus on ground balls, line drives,' said Lakers' coach Brian Sabo. "We said we'd be lucky to hit one out all year, and then we hit two in one game.'
