A hazardous weather alert has been issued for portions of several southwest counties, including Ottawa County, for tonight. Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible this evening, with damaging winds and large hail as the primary threats, according to the National Weather Service. These storms will also bring frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall. Storm motion will be east at 35 mph. Heavy rain is possible Friday and Saturday. Severe weather may be possible as well across southern Lower Michigan if the warm front lifts north.

An "action day' for elevated levels of ozone - when pollutants are expected to be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups' range - has been posted for Ottawa County today. The air quality advisory from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment also includes Muskegon, Kent, Allegan, Kalamazoo, Mason, Oceana and Van Buren counties. The forecast for the Grand Haven area today is for a high near 86 under mostly sunny skies, with south southwest winds between 14-16 mph, with gusts up to 26 mph.

Counterpart will meet at noon on Wednesday, June 15 at Holiday Inn, 940 W. Savidge St. The meeting will be a book swap. Bring surplus reading materials for a book bargain sale to benefit Counterpart. Leftover books will be donated to an area library. As a special feature of the book event, there will be a short book reading by a local author.

Two Grand Valley State University students were ticketed for violating a Grand Haven city ordinance after swimming from the south pier to the north pier earlier this afternoon, said Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Emergency crews from the GHDPS and Coast Guard Station Grand Haven responded to the Grand River channel at 1:43 p.m. when they were alerted to a possible water rescue of two people swimming across the channel.

The "Dusty Dozen's' spring GPS History Hunt will get under way on Thursday, the first of two history hunts. A 12-inch section of plastic conduit will be at each site, holding copies of the story of the building or location, as well as a card for the hunters' names. The answers to the hunt will be published in Monday's Tribune. A second hunt will be held on Thursday, July 16. The 30th Annual Sand Sculpture Contest will be held on June 25 at the Grand Haven City Beach from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Early registration to guarantee event T-shirts is Friday. Sand Sculpture Coordinator Courtney Olson said families, friends, individuals, and co-workers are encouraged to show off their sand-sculpting skills competing for the top prize in six different categories.

Grand Haven's Main Street Downtown Development Authority will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday to celebrate the completion of a 20-month infrastructure and streetscape reconstruction project. The ribbon cutting will take place at Pocket Park between Fifth Third Bank and Jumpin' Java on Washington Avenue. From noon to 3 p.m. there will be free food, T-shirts and other giveaways, and live music in all three blocks.

A boat hoist at North Shore Marina, 18275 Berwyck St., tipped over about noon Tuesday, when it ran off the steel launching track, according to a spokesperson at the marina. Truck cranes from Erickson's Inc. were called to the scene to right the hoist. According to an observer who lives nearby, a second crane was eventually called to the scene so the hoist could be lifted from both ends. The observer said there was a boat being loaded onto the hoist at the time of the fall.

The Western Michigan Christian boys golf team will be defending its regional title Friday at The Emerald Golf Course, located in St. John's. Coach Jack Wolffis and the team will leave for St. John's Thursday and shoot a practice round prior to the 9:30 a.m. start Friday. WMC's biggest rival at the regional appears to be River Valley League foe Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian. The Warriors won the conference this year, but dropped one jamboree to the Mustangs.

A 38-year-old Muskegon woman is scheduled to be sentenced July 25 for embezzling more than $70,000 from her former employer, Gage Motor Mall of Grand Haven. Amy Ruth Barnes-Trusty, 1260 Cardinal Circle Drive, Muskegon, entered a guilty plea to charges of embezzlement over $50,000, but less than $100,000, and forgery, during a hearing Monday afternoon in 20th Circuit Court. In exchange, Prosecuting Attorney Ron Frantz said his office would not press any additional charges.

Organizers of this year's Feast of the Strawberry Moon are expecting the re-enactment to be one of the largest ever, with more than 250 participants and volunteers all portraying the life and times of the fur trade period of the late 1760s. "People will enjoy the event this year as much as they've enjoyed it before,' Tri-Cities Historical Museum Executive Director Dennis Swartout said of the event, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday on Harbor Island. According to Swartout, organizers are working to make the event as authentic as possible.
