Spring Lake was supposed to be too young to contend for a Lakes Eight Conference championship this season, but time after time, the Lakers put together timely hitting and clutch pitching and defense when it mattered the most. The formula worked again on Friday for the Lakers, as they pulled out a pair of tight wins over Newaygo at Tom Hickman Field, 5-4 and 2-0, to improve to 12-2 in league play. That is the same mark as Tri-County, who split with Fruitport on Friday.

After several years of constant construction, work is almost complete on Washington Avenue. On Friday morning, construction contractors came and paved the third and final block of the downtown street, and all three blocks are slated to be open to traffic today. Originally scheduled to take place on Wednesday morning, inclement weather forced crews to come back on Friday. "I guess this means that the Memorial Day parade can come right down the new street,' Grand Haven Special Projects Manager Julie Beaton said.

Spring Lake Township firefighters responded to a car fire at about 4 p.m. Friday at Joe's Auto Parts, 14670 Cleveland St. Fire Chief Rick Nuvill said employees at the used car parts business were cutting a car apart when it caught on fire. "They used their extinguishers and they thought they had it out,' Nuvill said. "They went to get more extinguishers and, when they came back, it was fully involved. It was an old junk car with no physical value.'

The state said seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates in all regions of Michigan dropped in April as seasonal hiring picked up. The figures released Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget show jobless rates down in all 17 major regional labor markets compared to March. Total employment levels increased moderately in most regions, and labor force levels declined in all areas. Statewide, the unadjusted jobless rate in April was 10.1 percent, down from 11 percent in March.

A new exhibit at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum, 200 Washington Ave., aims to provide a glimpse into the area's architectural past. "For those that are lifelong residents, it will bring back wonderful memories of a bygone time,' Tri-Cities Historical Museum Executive Director Dennis Swartout said. The exhibit, "Fragments,' features a variety of historically significant architectural pieces salvaged from buildings in the Tri-Cities area that have either been demolished or significantly altered.

The SS Badger car ferry is off and running for another season on Lake Michigan. The ferry's owners said it's the only coal-fired steamship in operation in the United States. But that might have to change in the near future if the ship wants to continue to operate between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wis. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations could ban the Badger from dumping coal ash in Lake Michigan at the end of next year. The ship dumps the ash waste during its trips across the lake.

Muskegon's annual summertime Parties in the Park season kicks off June 3. The lineup of food and live music at Hackley Park in downtown Muskegon runs from 5-9 on nine Friday nights through Aug. 19. For adults wishing to participate in a "pick up game' of corn hole, they will find the game located on the Fourth Street side of Hackley Park. No bikes, Rollerblades, skateboards, pets, coolers or picnic baskets are allowed inside the gates. Picture ID is required for consumption of alcohol during this event.

Giving back comes "naturally' to Betty Kinney. "When they ask for volunteers, you just kind of go, ‘No one's raising their hand,'' Kinney said. "You go, ‘OK, I'll do it.' That's what you do.' Kinney, a Fruitport community member for about 30 years, is this year's Old Fashioned Days queen. She was nominated for the title for her involvement with the community through the school board, her church and many community service organizations.

Electric rates will be going up for customers of the Grand Haven Board of Light & Power. The BLP Board of Directors on Thursday adopted its business plan for the next fiscal year, which includes an average increase in its electric rates of 2.4 percent, effective July 1. The increase will add about $1.44 per month, or 1.85 percent, to the average residential customer's electric bill - and contribute $780,000 in revenues to the BLP.

Charles Jacobs pleaded to the Grand Haven Township Board on Monday that a street light is needed at the corner of Rich Street and 152nd Avenue for safety reasons. "The crime is bad, the speeding is bad,' said Jacobs, who has lived in his house on 152nd Avenue for 40 years. "My home is for sale because the paradise is gone.' The Grand Haven Township man is one of five property owners in that area who signed a petition for a street light special assessment district.
