Seventeen kindergarten students in Judy Tejchma's class at St. Mary's Parish School are extending an invitation to the general public to be their guests at the school to help them celebrate learning to count to 100. The "100 Days in School' event will take place Wednesday, June 8, from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. in the kindergarten classroom of the school, 421 E. Exchange St. in Spring Lake.

Today is the busiest prep sports day of the year, with district tournaments and state finals taking place at various sites across the state. Local teams will vie for district championships in baseball, softball and soccer, while area athletes will compete for all-state recognition at track and field state meets as well.

A pair of golf outings later this month will honor the memory of two Grand Haven High School student-athletes who passed away at a young age. On June 20, Grand Haven Golf Club will host the annual Kyle Moreland "Make a Memory' Family and Friends Golf Tournament. The event is held in memory of the 14 year-old son of Steve and Sandy Moreland of Grand Haven, who passed away in May of 2004 due to a heart condition. The entry fee for the 18-hole, two-person alternate shot scramble is $80 per golfer, with a special clergy fee of $65.

Aspiring Lumberjacks won't just be vying for a spot on Muskegon's United States Hockey League team during the team's tryout camp June 13-19; they also could be taking a step toward the next level. During last year's camp - the Jacks' first - several players not only made the team's roster, but they also paved the road to a college commitment.

A total of 14 Western Michigan University football players - including a pair of former Grand Haven Buccaneers - were recently named to Phil Steele's Preseason All Mid-American Conference team. Grand Haven's Dann O'Neill, an offensive tackle, and kicker John Potter, were both granted spots on Steele's second-team preseason list.

As the sun slid behind the trees west of Grand Haven High School on Thursday evening, 373 of the school's students went from being seniors to alumni. The high school's 135th commencement exercises were held in Buccaneer Stadium under a brilliant blue sky. Parents, friends and family filled the home team stands to watch the new graduates accept their diplomas. Before that, students heard from school and district administrators, and a few of their classmates.

Michigan needs a statewide attitude adjustment that includes harnessing the power of positive thinking while it undergoes a sometimes painful economic revival, Gov. Rick Snyder told business and government leaders today. The Republican governor said in a speech wrapping up the Detroit Regional Chamber's three-day Mackinac policy conference that Michigan has long been held down by negativity, infighting and looking backward. He said many people must now accomplish more with fewer resources.

The Consumers Energy Foundation has awarded $1,450 in grants to four organizations in Ottawa County to recognize outstanding volunteerism by two utility employees and one utility retiree. The Volunteer Investment Program grants recognize: • Robert C. Abbaduska, system controller at the Grand Rapids service center, who performed 50 hours of volunteer service over the past 12 months with Boy Scout Troop 157 in Holland. He served as an adult leader at summer camp. A $450 grant will be used for camping equipment.

During her time spent at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, eight year-old Greta Goszkowicz of North Muskegon has collected thousands of colorful beads, signifying any achievement - big or small - in her battle against lymphoblastic leukemia. The beads, in many cases, signify courage after Goszkowicz has successfully gone through medical procedures such as chemotherapy, a spinal tap or blood transfusion. Or they may reflect special people that have visited her in the hospital or new friends she has made.

Jack Kevorkian, the retired pathologist who captured the world's attention as he helped dozens of ailing people commit suicide, igniting intense debate and ending up in prison for murder, has died in a Detroit area hospital after a short illness. He was 83. Kevorkian, who said he helped some 130 people end their lives from 1990 to 1999, died about 2:30 a.m. today at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, close friend and prominent attorney Mayer Morganroth said. He had been hospitalized since last month with pneumonia and kidney problems, Morganroth said.

A Fruitport man accused of killing a swan with his personal watercraft said it was an accident, but dozens of witnesses disagree. "Everybody saw it wasn't an accident,' said Jennifer Ransom, who witnessed the incident from Pomona Park in Fruitport. "It was completely intentional.' "According to numerous witnesses, this incident did not have to happen,' Muskegon County Prosecutor Tony Tague said. Timothy Graves ll, 23, has been charged with unlawfully taking a protected animal.

Authorities said they're still working to identify skeletal remains of a woman found in April at a vacant property in southwestern Michigan. The Kalamazoo Gazette and the Battle Creek Enquirer reported that the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department on Thursday said that the remains found April 28 in Comstock Township near Kalamazoo weren't those of three missing area women.
