Winds uproot trees in Grand Rapids

Anonymous • Jul 21, 2015 at 10:52 AM

One of the largest uprooted trees was near the corner of Leonard Street and College Avenue in Grand Rapids. After withstanding years of sometimes severe Michigan weather, a strong gust of wind was finally too much for the big shade tree. It toppled onto College Avenue, blocking the road from sidewalk to sidewalk.

"I heard the boom and I thought it was my television," said neighbor Suella Kerkstra. "Then I looked out and saw the tree."

The falling tree pulled down power lines and utility poles.

A fallen tree also took out a garage on Myrtle Northwest in Grand Rapids.

In what deputies are calling a "freak accident," a woman was killed when a tree fell onto her small truck as she was driving on a Newaygo County road at around 2:20 p.m. Friday. It happened on M-20, east of White Cloud.

Newaygo County Sheriff's deputies said high winds caused the tree to fall and crash onto the truck just as the 60-year old driver from White Cloud was passing by. The tree ripped off the roof of the truck.

Investigators said the woman was killed instantly. They have not yet released her name.
