Emergency personnel found the mother, 28-year-old Amanda Marie Harlen; and her 6-year-old daughter, Jasmine Vander Hulst, outside the home, Kempker said. Vander Hulst was unresponsive, but emergency workers were able to revive her.

Firefighters and deputies tried to enter the home to rescue 14-month-old Trenton Harlen, but had to turn back due to the extreme flames and heat. Once firefighters doused the fire, the child was retrieved, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Kempker said.

Amanda Harlen and her daughter were taken to Holland Hospital, where Harlen was treated and released.

Jasmine Vander Hulst was transferred in critical condition to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Kempker said. A hospital spokesperson said she was upgraded to serious condition this morning.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is still under investigation. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall’s Office has been called in to investigate the fire.
