GH man hurt after driving into tree off Sheldon Road

Laurence Cooper was driving behind Treloar’s 2000 Buick Ultra sedan when he noticed the Buick swerve a few times on northbound Sheldon.

“We were doing between 20 and 25 (mph), and it looked like he was going to turn into a driveway,” Cooper said. “But as soon as he veered off, he went straight down the sidewalk.”

Cooper, who lives in the Fruitport area, said he pulled his Mazda sport utility vehicle up alongside the Buick and honked his horn to get the attention of southbound traffic. However, the Buick veered over the east-side curb, south of Orchard Avenue, and took out some small trees; then drove across the intersection where the car snapped the power line pole support wire, ran over a street sign and drove across two lawns before hitting a large maple tree.

“As soon as he hit the tree, I stopped and jumped out of the car, turned off his engine, kept his door closed,” Cooper said. “He was coming to and his dog was sitting on his lap, licking him.”

The dog then jumped out of the car and ran away, but police said the dog was soon secured by a passerby.

Police said Treloar was wearing a seat belt and his car’s air bag deployed.

Cooper, who was in Grand Haven on Tuesday to work on his mother’s car at a friend’s house, said he was prepared for such emergencies through Army training and as a first-responder in shops where he’s worked.

“I made sure (the man) stayed in the car,” he said. “I called 911 and kept him where he was at. I didn’t move him.”

Emergency personnel responded in just a few minutes, Cooper said.

Sgt. Clinton Holt of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety said there were no other vehicles involved in the accident, which is under investigation. GHDPS said today that alcohol was not a factor.

“It appears that it maybe was a medical issue,” Holt said at the scene.

Sheldon Road was closed for about two-and-a-half hours after the crash as a Board of Light & Power crew fixed the damaged power pole.
