Local departments to participate in statewide incident training today

The incident will be a simulated tornado strike that will “hit” in the area of the staging sites — which also includes The Palace of Auburn Hills, Saginaw State University and the North Berrien Fire Department in Coloma.

“The exercise is to plan for deployment,” Dreyer said. “Fire departments will be informed of what their emergency is at the time of dispatch.”

The dispatch for the training exercise will come from Traverse City, where the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs is holding its summer leadership conference at Great Wolf Lodge.

A call will be made to the Michigan Fire Service Mutual Aid Box Alarm System dispatch center in Lansing; which in turn will call dispatch centers in Oakland, Saginaw, Bay, Muskegon, Ottawa, Berrien and Cass counties. The local dispatch centers will then contact the participating departments, which will then report to the staging areas — or what they are calling “points of departure.”

“We will be assembling the resources from the two counties to respond to the incident,” Dreyer said.

Dreyer said it will be a big test of communications in the mutual aid system.

Previous trainings have been mostly done on paper.

“It is the first time we have been involved in the mobilization of equipment,” Dreyer said.
