DeJong was arrested Saturday evening a few minutes after he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole near the entrance to North Holiday Hills, at the intersection of Hickory Street and Iroquois Drive, in Spring Lake Township.

Police said DeJong had just led police in a high-speed chase around Ferrysburg and into Spring Lake Township after allegedly robbing The Reef convenience store, at the corner of West Spring Lake Road and Grand River Avenue, at gunpoint.

Reef employee Lisa Green was able to provide police with a license plate and description after the 8:15 p.m. incident. A Spring Lake/Ferrysburg police officer spotted the car a half-mile down the road and gave chase.

Once the suspect crashed his borrowed vehicle, he fled into the woods where police caught up with him moments later, DeYoung said.

The Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department is also looking at DeJong as a suspect in an armed robbery of the Kountry Korners store in Fruitport Township earlier the same day.

“We feel it’s probably him,” said Lt. Jim Christiansen of the MCSD. “We have to coordinate with the jail facilities to conduct a lineup.”

No charges have been filed at this point in the Muskegon County case. Christiansen said it is still under investigation.
