Latest ‘Walk of History’ points note origins of festival fireworks, memorial service

“It is our shared experiences,” Brice-O’Hara said at the unveiling ceremony in front of Grand Haven City Hall on Friday. “It shows that we are together in both the good and the tragic. Perhaps it is the tragic that binds us more tightly.”

The plaque noting the fireworks history has been installed in the walkway leading to Waterfront Stadium. The plaque marking the memorial service’s beginnings is in the sidewalk at Escanaba Park, site of Friday’s National Coast Guard Memorial Service.

Rear Adm. Michael Parks, commander of the USCG 9th District, said the care and support of the Coast Guard runs deep in Grand Haven — and exists year-round and not just during the 10-day festival. Park said he is “humbled” by that affection.
