Armed robbery suspect also charged in Muskegon County

A hearing with an attorney is scheduled for Thursday morning. A preliminary exam has been scheduled for Aug. 17.

DeJong was taken back to the Ottawa County Jail, where he is being held on a $250,000 bond for charges of armed robbery and fleeing a police officer. He could also be charged with operating under the influence of drugs, according to Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Chief Roger DeYoung.

DeJong was arrested around 8:30 p.m. July 30 after leading police on a high-speed chase. He was alleged to have gone into The Reef, 17176 W. Spring Lake Road, about 8:15 p.m., and demanded money at gunpoint.

DeYoung said the man had used an Airsoft gun, which looks almost exactly like a real gun, only with a neon-orange band on it. In this case, the band had either been painted over or cut off, he said.

The man did not have a permit for carrying a concealed weapon, DeYoung said.

When DeJong left the store, employee Lisa Green and her mother, Suzi Carr, called police with a description and a license plate number. The man had backed his car into the parking lot, they said.

A Spring Lake/Ferrysburg police officer patrolling in the area took up chase. DeYoung said the man led police from three departments on a chase into Ferrysburg, then out Old Grand Haven Road to Hickory Street and west to the entrance of North Holiday Hills, before not being able to make a turn and crashing into a utility pole and plowing into a swamp.

The man fled on foot before being captured a couple hundred yards away, police said. He suffered minor injuries and was taken from the scene by ambulance.
