The man was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix south on 56th Avenue about 11:30 a.m., when he failed to stop for a stop sign at Adams Street and drove through the intersection into the path of a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, Austin said. The Suburban struck the car on the driver’s side, heavily damaging the vehicle, Austin said.

The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and his passengers were pinned in the car. They had to be extricated by emergency workers.

A back-seat passenger — Gabriela Perez-Figueroa, 39, of Grand Rapids — was airlifted to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where she was listed in fair condition this morning. She was not wearing a seat belt.

Two other back-seat passengers and the front-seat passenger were taken by ambulance to Butterworth. They were Martha Garcia; Erika Yanneth Lugo, 19; and Andrea Morgado-Vasquez, 39 — all of Grand Rapids.

Austin said Morgado-Vasquez, the front-seat passenger, was the only one wearing a seat belt. Morgado-Vasquez and Lugo were in fair condition this morning at the hospital, a spokesperson said, and Garcia remains in serious condition.

The driver of the Suburban — Rachel Windemuller, 29, of Hudsonville — and her three children (ages 3, 1 and five months) were all taken by ambulance to Zeeland Community Hospital, where they were treated and released, Austin said. All three children were buckled into child seats. Windemuller was also wearing a seat belt.
