Pilot, passenger in Alpena-area helicopter crash identified

Colleen Konieczny said she and her husband saw the aircraft go down but didn’t realize they were watching a crash, rather than a safe landing.

“We saw a helicopter coming down, and it was dropping and dropping and dropping, and then it went behind the trees so we didn’t see it, so we were kind of watching for smoke and stuff and we didn’t see any smoke or fire,” she told The Alpena News.

The helicopter was registered to Logghe Stamping Co. Inc., a family-owned metal stamping and assembly supplier in Fraser.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash.

“We investigate three areas: man, machine and environment,” said NTSB investigator Aaron Sauer. He said it was too early to tell if the crash was the result of human error, mechanical failure or something else.
