Officials from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said that Len Painter, 67, was bruised and scraped up. He was transported by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Painter was released from the hospital late Tuesday night — after being treated for a broken bone, concussion, and cuts and bruises.

Painter was riding his bike on the right shoulder of eastbound Leonard, east of 152nd Avenue, about 4:25 p.m., when a car came up behind him. Police said the driver of the car started to go around the bicyclist, and noticed him start to wobble. The driver started to go wider, but told police the bicyclist turned to look behind him, wobbled some more, then all of a sudden turned in front of her.

The driver could not avoid striking the bicycle, police said.

Painter was thrown from his bike and landed on the north shoulder of the road. Police said he was extremely fortunate he was wearing his helmet.

The accident is still under investigation.
