SL woman hurt in crash

Margaret Daugherty suffered multiple injuries in the 6:07 p.m. accident, Wolffis said. She was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital, where she was treated, then transferred to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon where she was listed in critical condition this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Daugherty was eastbound on Leonard Road in her 2000 Dodge Caravan, and was beginning to make a right-hand turn onto 152nd Avenue when her van was struck just in front of the driver’s side door, Wolffis said.

The driver of the other vehicle — Erik Johnson, 16, also of Spring Lake — was traveling west on Leonard Road and could not stop behind a slower-moving vehicle that was also approaching the intersection, Wolffis said. Johnson took evasive action, traveling into the eastbound lane of Leonard Road, and hit Daugherty’s van.

Both vehicles went off the road, with the van crashing through a chain-link fence into a yard on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Johnson was not injured.

Both Daugherty and Johnson were wearing seatbelts, police said.

Wolffis said the accident is still under investigation, although “it appears that excessive speed played a role in this incident.”
