Police said a 1995 Chevy pickup truck was traveling slow on eastbound I-96, just west of 112th Avenue, at about 8:20 a.m. The driver said he had just run out of gas and was coasting to a stop.
Behind the pickup truck, a 1990 Oldsmobile driven by 38-year-old Brian Kroft was unable to stop and hit the pickup from behind, said Sgt. Jon Ditmar of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. The impact sent the pickup — driven by 26-year-old Scott Mead, also of Muskegon — into the interstate median’s cable barrier.
Ditmar said Kroft was pinned in his crashed car and had to be extricated by Crockery Township firefighters. Kroft was then taken to Mercy Hospital in Muskegon by a North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance in “serious but stable condition,” Ditmar said.
The crash remains under investigation.
