The house sat at the end of Cypress off 120th Avenue, south of Leonard Road. It was scheduled to be removed to make way for the new M-231 highway, Dreyer said, and the contractor who was removing the homes for the Michigan Department of Transportation made it available for the fire department to use.

Dreyer said his department trained in the building last Monday evening, practicing search-and-rescue and forceful entry techniques.

Some minimal training was done when they returned to the site about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Dreyer said they cleared the scene about 7:30 Saturday night.

Dreyer said this was one of the last houses being removed for the new highway on the north side of the Grand River.

The fire chief said no advance notification is given on a training burn in order to keep traffic down for safety reasons.
