George Edward Covington was arrested after a witness called 911 and reported seeing the man put the guns in his pockets, Yonker said.

Covington was part of a group who were stopped by police in the downtown area after a 911 call came in on three suspicious males, Yonker said. There was no insurance produced for their van, so the vehicle was parked and the three men left on foot.

Just prior to the men leaving the van, a witness reported seeing one of them grab a couple of guns and slip them into his pants pockets, Yonker said. The men were then observed entering the post office, 324 Washington Ave.

Police arrive on the scene, and one man came out of the building and was found to have a loaded hand gun and a pellet gun. He was arrested.

Police then drew their guns and approached the other two men, commanding them to lie on the ground so they could also be searched for weapons. No weapons were found on the other men, Yonker said, and those two men were later released.

Covington was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance (cocaine less than 25 grams) and possession of marijuana.

Bond was set at $5,000 and Covington remains lodged in the Ottawa County Jail.

Yonker said the incident is still under investigation and additional charges could be authorized.

Nobody was hurt in the incident on Tuesday and the men did not do anything threatening while in the post office, Yonker said.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, and the post office closed a half-hour early that day because of it. The post office opened Wednesday morning with normal business hours.
