GHT firefighter to remain on restricted duties

Lt. Bryce Dennings, 42, was arrested about 3 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 96 in Crockery Township after his car slid off the road, said Lt. Steve Kempker of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Dennings was not on duty at the time and he was not responding to a call, Cargo said.

Dennings was taken to the Ottawa County Jail and later released, officials said. Court records indicate that he could be charged with operating while intoxicated.

Kempker said that Dennings will likely be arraigned on the charge once test results are returned — sometime within the next couple of weeks. He would not say what kind of test was done.

Township officials met with Dennings this morning — the first day he was scheduled to be on duty since the incident.

“Lt. Dennings remains employed by the township, but he will no longer respond to emergencies on behalf of the township,” Cargo said after the meeting. “He will be working from 8 to 5, Monday through Friday. We have administrative tasks he can fulfill.”

Cargo said the township is aware of the criminal charge and has asked to see the police report. He expects to have that early next week.

Cargo said while “the township takes this matter seriously ... the township will not make a final decision until the criminal charge has been resolved. It would be inappropriate for us to do anything when you have criminal charges simply pending.”

Cargo said it could be as long as six months before the case is resolved.
