Family members identified the suspect as Davanh Phouangphet, 30.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s detectives said Phouangphet was arguing with his landlord, who also lived inside the home.
“An accelerant was thrown on the victim and she was set on fire,” Lt. Mark Bennett said.
The 53-year-old woman suffered burns from her torso to her head, authorities said. The home was also damaged in the fire.
Thong Phouangphet, the suspect’s brother, said Davanh became angry after the landlord gave him a warning about loud music.
“She gave him a choice — either you go downstairs and you’re good, or you don’t and I’m going to kick you out,” Thong said.
Thong said his brother suffers from a mental illness.
“He sees demons that talk to him,” Thong told WZZM-TV.
Davanh’s family said he hasn’t been in trouble since he moved to the area two years ago.
Police said Davanh Phouangphet is facing charges of attempted homicide and arson, and is expected to be formally charged in court today.
The victim has painful burns, authorities said, but is expected to survive.
