An 18-year-old Grand Haven man was arrested Thursday morning after he was witnessed entering a resident’s car in the 1800 block of Dykhouse Ave., Freeman said.

Police were called at approximately 4:40 a.m. by an area resident who saw the man enter her car, then walk away to the west.

Responding officers found the suspect inside another parked car, Freeman said. The suspect fled on foot and resisted arrest.

“Officers deployed a Taser to bring the suspect under control,” Freeman said. “The suspect and the officers were not injured.”

The man did have possession of stolen property related to the Dykhouse larceny, Freeman said. He was arrested and taken to the Ottawa County Jail pending arraignment, she said.

Police said the investigation revealed that the man was entering unlocked cars in the area.

Anyone missing anything from their cars in that area is encouraged to call GHDPS at 842-3460.

“Residents are encouraged to remove valuables and lock their cars,” Freeman said.

This man is likely not the person involved in “smash and grabs” in the area, nor the same person being sought in Fruitport Township, she said.

Fruitport Township police reported they are investigating a larceny from a vehicle at Fruitport Middle School.

“There have been other recent larcenies from vehicles in church parking lots in the Fruitport Township area,” said Detective Sgt. Bruce Morningstar of the Fruitport Township Police Department. “Police are investigating whether these incidents are related.”

The incident at the middle school took place between 6 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Morningstar said. The window of the victim’s vehicle was smashed out, and the victim’s purse and contents were stolen.

Members of the community are urged to report any suspicious persons, vehicles and/or activity to the police. In Ottawa County, call Silent Observer at 877-88-SILENT or GHDPS at 842-3460. In Muskegon County, call Silent Observer at 231-72-CRIME or the Fruitport Township Police Department at 231-865-8477.
