Police said the 18-year-old woman, whose name was not immediately released, was driving her 1992 Toyota south on Pine Avenue when it was struck in the driver’s side door by a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero that was westbound on 17th Street. Capt. Rick Walters of the Holland Department of Public Safety said the Alero, driven a 21-year-old Holland-area man, went through the intersection without stopping for a red flashing light at around 1:40 a.m.

The woman was taken by AMR Ambulance to Holland Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead by as a result of her injuries, Walters said.

Investigators said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and the Holland-area man, who suffered minor injuries, was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated. He is being held at the Holland Department of Public Safety and criminal charges were expected to be reviewed by the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office later today, Walters said.

The crash remains under investigation.
