Firefighters were called to the home of Wayne and Robbin VanderZwaag, 16695 136th Ave., after the fire started and the VanderZwaags' son, Justin, ran next door to have the neighbors call for help. Justin was the only one home at the time.

Strong winds helped the fire spread to the house, which was still ablaze long past noon.

Authorities said everyone in the home got out OK, except for a pet cat.

The Crockery Township Fire Department was assisted by several other area fire departments — including Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Fruitport, Coopersville and Grand Haven Township. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance and Canteen 450 from Norton Shores were also on the seen.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family. The home was a total loss, said Crockery Township Fire Chief Gary Dreyer.

A cause for the fire was not immediately available.

More details on the fire will be published in Monday's Grand Haven Tribune.
