Laurie Kowalski said she was upset when she was driving into Grand Haven to meet her husband for an appointment. She had recently lost her full-time job and had just found out that her temporary job was finished. She had also just learned that a friend had terminal cancer.
“I was preoccupied,” Kowalski said.
Kowalski was heading west on Leonard Road just before 11 a.m. when the wheels of her Jeep Liberty went off the road and she lost control of the SUV. The car went down into a ditch, hit the rise of a driveway and started rolling.
“I just hung on for dear life,” she said. “I can’t believe I’m not hurt.”
Kowalski said she was wearing her seatbelt when the vehicle rolled at least two, and maybe three, times.
The car lost its back axle in the process, but landed upright in a patch of scrub on the north side of the road.
A second crash occurred in the same area when a woman in a small SUV slowed down for emergency vehicles and was rear-ended by a larger SUV. Nobody was injured in that accident.
