Police were called late that afternoon when someone reported three suspicious males in the area of the 300 block of Washington Avenue, according to Capt. Rick Yonker of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Moments later, a witness reported seeing a man put a couple of guns in his pocket, so several backup officers were also sent to the area, Yonker said.
About 5:30 p.m., Covington was arrested in the post office lobby.
A hand gun and a pellet gun were confiscated, Yonker said.
Two other men were stopped in a van in the area of Second Street and Washington Avenue, based on information received from witnesses, Yonker said. One man was ticketed for not having auto insurance and the van was confiscated.
Police were not aware of any plan the men may have had when they went into the post office, Yonker said for an earlier story.
Covington was also charged with possession of a controlled substance — narcotic or cocaine – less than 25 grams; and possession of marijuana, second or subsequent offense. Bond was set at $5,000 cash or surety and Covington posted bond to get out of jail on Jan. 20.
