They have been lodged in the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center and are expected to appear in court later today, said Sgt. Bruce Morningstar of the Fruitport Township Police. Their names were not released.

Police were called to the mall at 4:15 this morning when a mall security officer discovered the two boys inside the mall, Morningstar said. The mall was not open at the time. The boys fled on foot out of the mall, dropping stolen items along the way, Morningstar said.

Police were contacted and units from Fruitport Township, Norton Shores, the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department and state police surrounded the mall, Morningstar said. A police dog from the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department was used to track the suspects and help recover the discarded stolen items.

Police captured one of the boys near Safeguard Storage, on Independence Drive near the Meijer store across Sternberg Road from the mall, Morningstar said. The second suspect was found at a residence on Airport Road and taken into custody.

Many of the kiosk businesses in the mall were targeted during this incident, Morningstar said. Police recovered an undisclosed amount of stolen cash and other stolen property estimated to be valued at more than $5,000.

It was unknown this morning how the boys gained entry into the mall, police said. No further information was being released at the time.
