Standoff near Fruitport

Police were on the scene of a standoff at a house in the 5500 block of Pontaluna Road, about 1 mile east of Cooley Road and approximately 3 miles northeast of Fruitport.

The incident began at about 7 p.m. Thursday with a call to 911. The caller hung up, authorities said, and there was no answer when dispatchers called back, so police were sent to the address.

Fruitport Township police officers found a heavily armed man at the house when they arrived, said Fruitport Township Supervisor Brian Werschem. The man, whose identity was not released, was alone in the house.

"We discovered him armed and threatening, so we backed off," Werschem said.

Werschem said he was updating the media Thursday night because all police officials were busy with the standoff, which was still in progress as of 10 p.m.

Township police turned the incident over to the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department SWAT team. Police have been in contact with the suspect, Werschem said.

Pontaluna Road was closed in that area and ambulances were standing by late Thursday. Neighbors of up to a mile away from the house were evacuated from their homes.

At about 10:50 p.m., the man turned himself into police. They took him to the Hackley Hospital for observation.

Werschem said the man called 911, and his family got out of the home early on in or before the standoff. Nobody suffered injuries.

Police said the man was carrying one gun and had other hunting guns available to him.
