Diver's training

It was a dive training session for the Kent County Sheriff’s Department Underwater Search/Recovery Team.

“We come out about once a year,” said Don Hamilton, marine unit supervisor for the department. “It’s a good dive for us because (the water) is clear. Normally, we dive in water with this much visibility” — pressing his hand up to his face.

Nine of the 11 team members practiced diving techniques around the rocks at the base of the south pier and about 100 yards off the pier heads for some deep-water work.

Hamilton said it was important for them to get some Lake Michigan experience so they know how to handle the currents for the times they assist the Lakeshore counties — Ottawa, Allegan and Muskegon.

The supervisor said the group was working on basic scuba skills from about 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Today, the team is scheduled to do stress and rescue training at Big Pine Island Lake near Rockford.
