Estella Vitins is in fair condition this afternoon at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Vitins, who has dementia, is the same person reported missing by the Kent County Sheriff’s Department early Monday afternoon, police confirmed.

Emergency personnel were called to a crash at 2:07 a.m. today on eastbound I-96 near the 5-mile marker, said Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Vitins had parked her car near the 6-mile marker and was walking back toward the Fruitport exit along the shoulder of the eastbound lanes when she was struck, Buter said.

The vehicle that hit her left the scene, he said. The car was a gray jaguar and it will be missing a passenger side mirror, Buter said. There may be other damage to the passenger side as well.

The crash occurred between 1:45 and 2:07 a.m. today, Buter said. The jaguar continued eastbound toward Grand Rapids.

As of noon today, police had located the suspect vehicle in the area of 60th and Kalamazoo in Kent County, said Lt. Mark Bennett. A 48-year-old man is being questioned regarding his involvement.

Bennett said several Silent Observer Tips led to the discovery of the vehicle.
