Emergency crews were called at 6:30 p.m. to a home in the 13600 block of 128th Ave. in Robinson Township, where a 1½-year-old child and a 51-year-old woman were assaulted, said Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
Minutes later, an SUV driven by a man believed to be the suspect in the assault crashed into a tree at the intersection of 128th Avenue and Green Street — about a mile away from the home where the assault allegedly took place.
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said she heard the crash and called 911. She then ran across the street to the SUV, where she observed the man crawl into the back seat.
“He couldn’t get out — he was pinned in,” the neighbor said. “He kept saying, ‘Get me out, get me out.’”
The man eventually kicked open the door. He was half-walking, half-running away from the scene before being stopped by a volunteer firefighter, the neighbor said.
“He seemed intoxicated and you could smell alcohol,” she said.
Buter said the man did not resist being taken into custody by officers. The man had minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital.
The woman and child also appeared to have minor injuries. A different ambulance transported them to the Grand Haven hospital.
