Fire destroys Allendale pole barn

A deer hunter in a nearby field discovered the fire at about 6:15 p.m., Keefe said. Homeowner Todd Meindertsma was inside his house at the time.

When firefighters arrived, the building at 11949 48th Ave., about a mile north of M-45, was fully involved in fire, the chief said.

Units from Wright-Tallmadge, Coopersville, Blendon, Georgetown and Robinson fire departments assisted at the scene.

Keefe said there are no fire hydrants in the area so they had to have help shuttling in the water.

The 44-foot-wide by 57-feet-long building housed several tractors, a travel trailer and a John Deere gator, Keefe said.

The building and its contents were a total loss, the chief said.

The cause of the fire was undetermined this morning, but it was believed to have started in a wood storage area in a lean-to attached to the barn, Keefe said.

Fire officials were planning to be on the scene today to continue their investigation.
