Southbound traffic was backed up for more than an hour in the area, because of the incident.

The truck was pulled over on the southbound lanes of the highway south of Sherman Street in the Black Creek area, said firefighter Casey Rosenberg.

The truck was full of bags of leaves, but firefighters were able to put out the fire before it reached the garbage compartment, Rosenberg said.

The two occupants of the vehicle got out safely, he said.

“We had to shut down the highway completely until the fire was out,” Rosenberg said.

Once that happened, they opened up one lane of traffic.

Rosenberg said they did not know the cause of the fire, or the amount of damage to the truck.

“That will be handled by the insurance company,” he said.

The truck had to be towed from the scene.
