The chase ended shortly after 9 p.m. when the suspect crashed into a police cruiser, said Det. Sgt. Bruce Morningstar of the Fruitport Township Police Department.

Police were alerted shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday when a blue 1992 GMC Jimmy was reported stolen from the parking lot of the Admiral gas station at 531 E. Laketon in Muskegon. The vehicle had been left running, unlocked and unoccupied while the driver went into the gas station, Morningstar said.

A City of Muskegon police officer spotted the vehicle a short time later in the area of Sherman and Getty.

“The officer observed the vehicle traveling without lights on as it failed to stop for a red light at the intersection,” Morningstar said. “The officer followed the vehicle with lights and sirens activated, but the driver refused to stop.”

Police said the vehicle went onto southbound U.S. 31 and slowed momentarily for Fruitport Township police, before accelerating and crashing into one of the police cruisers.

Officers were able to get the vehicle stopped immediately after the collision, Morningstar said. The driver was taken into custody after briefly resisting officers.

There was minor damage to the SUV and to the police cruiser.

No police officers were injured. The suspect was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, before being lodged at the Muskegon County Jail.

The suspect’s name was not released pending charges and arraignment.
