The women, both 23, are not being named pending arraignment, said Sgt. John Wolffis of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
Police were called to the Old Navy store, 12635 Felch St. in Holland Township, at 5:45 a.m. Friday after a store detective was threatened with a handgun. Police said the two women fled the store with a couple of bags of stolen merchandise.
Wolffis said the women had selected and then concealed items before trying to leave the store. A loss-prevention officer confronted them outside the store after they had placed the items in bags.
The officer was able to get the bags, but the women fled to a van. He was trying to get the license plate number of the van when they drove up to him, got out and tried to retrieve the bags, Wolffis said.
One woman grabbed a bag and got back into the van. The other woman was not successful, but then produced a handgun and threatened the store detective, Wolffis said. She grabbed the bag and fled.
The van was located a short time later a few miles north, on U.S. 31 near Tyler Street in Olive Township, where the women were arrested without incident, Wolffis said.
Police said a large amount of stolen property was recovered during the investigation. They had been taken from stores in Holland Township and the Muskegon area, Wolffis said.
The women have been lodged in the Ottawa County Jail on numerous charges including armed robbery, Wolffis said. The incident is still under investigation.
