Ottawa County residents need to be leery of a scam being reported recently, said. Sgt. John Wolffis of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
People, mostly senior citizens, are receiving calls saying they have won a significant prize — such as cash, vehicles or property,” Wolffis said.
They are told that the prize-bearers are in the area and will be delivering the prize, but the winner first has to get a pre-paid credit card with a specific amount of cash on it. The scammers then call back and get the number on the card, saying they will be by soon to deliver the prize. They never arrive, Wolffis said.
“The suspects sound very believable,” Wolffis said. “They are very skilled in convincing the victim that this is a legitimate call.”
The Sheriff’s Department warns people not to give personal or credit card info to unknown callers, he said.
