Grace Groothuis, 7, was listed in critical condition early this afternoon at DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. Her sister, Hannah, 9, had been listed in serious condition by police, but was discharged from the hospital, a spokesperson said.
The girls were backseat passengers in their father’s 2001 Honda Accord. They were wearing seatbelts.
Their father, Kevin Groothuis, 43, was eastbound on Port Sheldon Road at about 6:30 a.m. Friday. He stopped at the four-way stop, and then proceeded into the intersection, according to Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
Kenneth Campfield, 59, of Allendale was driving a 2006 Ford Pickup truck south on 72nd Avenue, failed to stop at the intersection and struck the Accord on the rear, driver’s side area, Austin said.
The Groothuis car was pushed into a culvert.
Neither of the drivers was injured. They were both wearing seatbelts, Austin said.
Campfield was ticketed for disregarding the stop sign, Austin said.
