Thirty-four passengers were on the train when it hit the car in Grandville, southwest of Grand Rapids.
The car's driver said one of his tires had fallen off about 10 p.m. Tuesday, forcing him to stop on the tracks. Brent Nicholai said he could not move the car by himself and was waiting for a tow truck to arrive when the train began to approach.
Passengers stayed on the train, which continued on to a nearby station just before 11 p.m. The train was headed to Chicago from Grand Rapids.
