Mental examination ordered for father charged in baby's death

The baby, Tyler, suffered internal injuries, some of which could have resulted from being shaken, and other assaultive injuries, police said.

Police say the injuries - including older bruises - found on the baby were inconsistent with the story Casanova told paramedics when they went to his Norton Shores home to try to revive the baby.

“He told us he dropped the baby when he let the dog in, and tripped over the dog,” Norton Shores police Chief Dan Shaw said.

Casanova faces an open murder charge and, during his preliminary examination hearing Wednesday morning in Muskegon County District Court, the judge ordered the man to undergo a forensic competency examination prior to additional court proceedings.

His attorney, Shawn Davis, asked for the examination, telling the court that Casanova has received treatment during the past several years for various mental health issues.
