Woman hurt when semi runs red light

Police said the semi jack-knifed after the crash and partially blocked the highway at Riley Street in Holland Township for some time. The highway's southbound lanes were shut down for about 15 minutes after the crash.

The driver of the SUV, Jessica Smith of Zeeland suffered cuts from broken glass, and police said she sought her own treatment. The semi driver, Jeffrey Hofman of Grant, was not injured.

Sgt. Brent Converse of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Smith, 28, said she had the green light as she attempted to turn from Riley Street onto southbound U.S. 31.

Hofman, 42, told police that the traffic signal was partially obstructed by snow and the sun's glare.

Authorities say motorists should slow down and stop if they can't properly see a traffic signal.
