Joseph Firlit, 48, of Port Sheldon Township, was taken by ambulance to Holland Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Brent Converse of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Mark Jones, 37, of Grand Haven suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment, Converse said.

The crash happened just after 8 a.m. when Jones, who was southbound on Butternut, lost control of his Jeep Wrangler on the icy road, crossed the centerline and hit Firlit’s northbound Cadillac head-on, Converse said.

The road was shut down for an hour after the crash.

Converse urged drivers to use caution during periods of near-freezing temperatures, because wet roads can turn to ice very quickly.
