Shawn Defouw, 23, of Hamilton, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in that crash, said Sgt. Brent Converse of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Defouw was traveling east on Lakewood, approaching Ruth Road, Converse said. He distracted by his cell phone, looked up and realized that the traffic light had turned red and other cars were entering the intersection.

Defouw attempted to swerve, but struck the front of a car driven by Nancy Lawson, 46, of Holland. She was not injured.

Defouw lost control of his car and it went off the road and hit a utility pole, breaking it off, Converse said. This caused the power lines to come down and the traffic light to be lowered just a few feet above the ground.

Consumers Energy was called in to replace the pole.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
