Small crane catches fire at power plant

The vehicle was not occupied, Consumers Energy spokesman Roger Morgenstern said. No other equipment was damaged and the vehicle was “well away” from the power plant at the time of the fire.

The crane is smaller than the typical utility bucket truck with a cherry-picker lift, Morgenstern explained. It was being used to unload equipment in a gravel lay-down area on the north end of the complex, 17000 Croswell St. in Port Sheldon Township.

The operator had left the vehicle to use a restroom, and discovered the cab was on fire when he returned.

Port Sheldon Township firefighters put out the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Morgenstern said.

A contractor working on the property owned the vehicle.
