To everything, there is a season

George Lessens, chief meteorologist for WZZM-TV, said is strictly done for the simplicity of keeping records. For example, the winter season would include part of a previous year (the end of December), and it goes from there.
So, for record-keeping, meteorologists call December through February as the winter months, March through May is spring, June through August is summer, and September through November is autumn.
"Also, the 'seasons' on the calendar are strictly from an astronomical viewpoint, not a meteorological viewpoint," Lessons said. "Spring 2013 arrived at 7:02 a.m. EDT Tuesday, based on when the sun was exactly over the equator, as the Earth orbits around the sun."
