Shelly Stillson, 48, of Grand Haven, the passenger in a van driven by Stacie Stillson, 27, also of Grand Haven, sought her own treatment for a hand injury, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

The Stillsons were southbound on U.S. 31 at about 2:20 p.m. when a vehicle in front of them lost control after being cut off, and Stillson could not avoid striking it, police said.

Charles Posthumus, 81, of Holland, said he was on his way home from Grand Haven when somebody ran him off the road.

“I was coming back, tried to correct,” he said. “She had nowhere to go.”

Both vehicles ended up in the U.S. 31 median.

Posthumus said the car that cut him off continued on down the road.

Traffic, increased by nearby Grand Haven High School letting out, was reduced to one lane in each direction for about 45 minutes.

Paramedics also took Posthumus’ wife, Alice Joy, 82, to the ambulance to be checked. She was not believed to be injured, police said.
