Dad reopens SL eatery

Pruebelo Mexican Restaurant, 510 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake, closed when owner Scott Domont took a new job in Muskegon. His father, Dave Domont, negotiated a lease with the building's landlord and reopened the business on March 15.

Dave is no stranger to the salsa. He launched a Mexican restaurant in Illinois in the 1980s and opened Pruebelo in Ferrysburg 19 years ago.

Scott and his wife, Christine, took over the restaurant and moved it to Spring Lake eight years ago.

Dave, a long-time licensed builder, has been working in construction since his son took over the business. But now the dining room tables have turned.

“With a family at home, he needed more time with the family,” Dave said. “I agreed to go ahead and buy it back and give him a break.”

Dave said reopening was not a certainty after his son closed the business. He said closing and reopening was not a public relations ploy to try to generate more business.

“I knew I wanted to try to make it work, but I still had a lot of hoops to go through,” Dave said. “There were a lot of details to take care of and I didn't want to be too presumptuous.”

The menu remains mostly the same.
