Two injured in crash

A pickup truck careened off Mercury Drive at the Millhouse Bayou Bridge just after 10 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses said the driver, a 43-year-old Grand Haven Township man, was more seriously injured than the 43-year-old female passenger. Emergency personnel rushed them both to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Chris Koster of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. They were reported in stable condition this morning at North Ottawa Community Hospital. They were both wearing seatbelts.

Police said the driver, whose name was not being released pending the investigation, was operating his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck southeast on Mercury Drive when he lost control and hit the bridge guardrail on the west side. The vehicle went across the road, struck and went over the other guardrail and flipped over down the hill, landing on its wheels in a swampy area near the Grand River.

Tow trucks from Lakeside and Tri-Cities Towing were used to stabilize, and then slowly drag the vehicle through the brush and back onto the road as a small crowd watched from the bike path, as a light rain fell.

This was the second crash on Mercury Drive in one day. Spencer McGregor, 18, was killed in a one-car crash early Saturday morning on Mercury Drive near Ammeraal Street. That story is HERE.
