Ringing up customers

“Buster Mathis Jr. bought a phone from us a couple of weeks ago,” said Norton, a sales clerk at the new Coastal Communications AT&T store, which opened this spring at 1009 S. Beacon Blvd. in Grand Haven.

Mathis — who was born in East Grand Rapids and is the son of heavyweight boxing legend Buster Mathis Sr. — lost a heavyweight boxing match to Mike Tyson in 1995. Tyson knocked Mathis out with a right uppercut in the third round, and Mathis retired the next year at age 26 with a 21-2 record.

“It was kind of cool,” Norton said of his encounter with Mathis. “I was so nervous at first. I never met somebody with that much star power before.”

The former champ — he held the USBA heavyweight title several times in 1990s — settled on a Lumia 920 Windows phone, according to Norton.

Besides cellphones, Coastal Communications specializes in a low-cost home phone service with unlimited minutes and long distance that requires no Internet service.

“You can actually take this home phone with you wherever you go,” Norton said, adding that the unit does require electricity.

Coastal Communications also sells cable and high-speed Internet packages, with discounts available for bundling services.

“People like choices,” Norton said.
