The Kent County medical examiner notified the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department on Friday afternoon that Edgar Martinez, 20, died at a Grand Rapids hospital.
Lt. Mark Bennett of the Sheriff's Department said investigators had determined that Martinez used a gun to hold up the Macatawa Bank branch at the corner of Butternut Drive and James Street in Holland Township on Tuesday. Witnesses said the robber fled on foot and then got into a vehicle driven by another person.
Martinez was one of four people in a car stopped by police on Thursday in the Leisure Estates Mobile Home Community in Holland Township. Police said Martinez, who most recently lived in Park Township, shot himself in the head during the traffic stop. No one else was hurt.
Bennett said a forensic autopsy will be performed on Martinez's body in the next few days, and the case remains under investigation.
