Voting anyone?

There is often something on the ballot every three months, since the state a few years back mandated elections be held only four specific times a year. The first Tuesday (after the first Monday) in May does indeed have a ballot issue for the Grand Haven area.

The operating millage for Grand Haven Area Public Schools is up for renewal on May 7. Voters in the district will be asked to renew the statuatory rate of 18 mills for nonprincipal residences and other non-exempt property (most of us do not pay it, as it's mainly for second "vacation" homes). and 6 mills on commercial personal property.

Elsewhere in Ottawa County on May 7, nonprincipal operating renewals are also up for voting in the West Ottawa, Zeeland and Hudsonville school districts.

Voters in Holland and Zeeland townships will be asked to approve an airport operating millage of one-tenth of a mill. Voters in the Grandville school district will be asked to approve borrowing up to $75.2 million for districtwide building improvements. Allendale Township voters get to decide a zoning referendum, voters in the Hudsonville school district will be asked to approve a building and site sinking fund tax levy of up to 1 mill, and voters in the Zeeland school district will be asked to renew a millage of four-tenths of a mill for public recreation.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day.

Note for Grand Haven Township voters: The Precinct 1 polling place has been moved from Resurrection Life Church to Watermark Church, beginning with the May 7 election. There will now be two precincts at Watermark Church (1 and 5), along with two precincts (2 and 4) at Hope Reformed Church.
